And I Would Never Be the Same

I heard the noises in between the walls. The bubbles and cracks appeared over night. The next morning the water flowed from the sinks, wading in ankle deep water, watching my house sinking from the inside.

But there was no rain.

It was unusually sunny for this time of year. Sun and fluffy white clouds and record breaking temperatures. October first.

I burned despite the ever rushing waves.

I splished and splashed and tried to call a plumber.

No answer.

Phone lines cut.

Keys flushed.

I let the cat out the window, three stories up, he meowed for hours on the balcony and I sobbed.

No way out.

No landlord.

My house a mess.

My life a mess.

And when I went to sleep that night, my bed drifting amongst my dvds, yoga mat and soggy underwear.

I resigned that this was the end.

The next morning, surprised and dry, like a desert, like it never happened.

But the water damage was done.
